A Hidden Treasure of the Forest
The African Green-breasted Pitta (Pitta reichenowi) is one of Uganda’s most magical forest birds, glowing with color yet rarely seen. It belongs to the Pittidae family and is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN 2025 report, though its population is small and decreasing. In Uganda, it appears seasonally in lowland and mid-altitude forests like Kibale and Semuliki. Unlike most pittas, it is a partial migrant, traveling hundreds of kilometers within Africa between breeding and non-breeding grounds. Elusive and beautiful, it remains a true prize for patient birders.
