A Bright Spirit of the Wetlands
The Heuglin’s Masked Weaver (Ploceus heuglini) is a lively, golden bird of Uganda’s wetlands and savannas, known for its intricate hanging nests. A member of the Ploceidae family, it is currently listed as Least Concern, with a stable and widespread population (numbers not precisely known). In Uganda, it thrives in papyrus swamps, lake edges, and open woodland. It is non-migratory, making only short local movements following rains, usually just a few kilometers. Small in size but rich in character, it reflects the quiet resilience of Africa’s everyday birdlife.
