A Cool Flash of Forest Blue
The African Blue Flycatcher (Elminia longicauda) is a calm, sky-blue presence that drifts gracefully through Uganda’s forests. A member of the Stenostiridae family, it is listed as Least Concern, with a stable and widespread population, though exact numbers are not well known.
In Uganda, it is commonly found in forests and well-wooded habitats such as Kibale, Bwindi, Budongo, and even mature gardens, where it quietly feeds on insects. It prefers the mid to upper canopy, often moving in pairs or small groups.
This species is non-migratory, making only short local movements, typically within a few kilometers, following food availability. Gentle and consistent, the African Blue Flycatcher is a reassuring sign of a healthy, living forest.
