A Quiet Secret of the Forest
The Dusky Crimsonwing (Cryptospiza jacksoni) is a shy, ground-loving finch of Uganda’s highland forests, often heard before it is seen. A member of the Estrildidae family, it is listed as Least Concern, with a stable but poorly known population. In Uganda, it inhabits montane forests like Bwindi and the Rwenzori ranges, keeping to dense undergrowth. It is non-migratory, moving only short distances within forest patches. Small and easily overlooked, it reflects the hidden richness of Uganda’s forests and the need to protect these fragile habitats.
