A Whisper in the Rainforest
The Grauer’s Broadbill (Smithornis graueri) is a quiet forest gem of Uganda’s Albertine Rift. From the Eurylaimidae family, it is listed as a Near Threatened species by the recent IUCN report of 2023, with a declining and small population (exact numbers unknown which calls for more monitoring programs by conservation organizations ). In Uganda, it lives in dense montane and lowland forests like Bwindi and Semuliki, often hidden in the canopies and sometimes undergrowth. It is non-migratory, moving only short distances within its forest home range. Soft-voiced and elusive, it reminds us how fragile and precious our remaining forests truly are.
