Martial Eagle

Conservation Status:

According to the 2025 IUCN report, this species is currently listed as one of Uganda’s Endangered eagles.

Population Trends:

Its population in Uganda are as well declining, largely due to habitat loss, persecution, and human-wildlife conflict.

Population Size:

Estimated global population of around 30,000 individuals

Family:

Accipitridae family, it stands at the top of the avian food chain.

Location:

In Uganda, the Martial Eagle is found in savannas, open woodlands, and lightly forested areas, especially in protected areas.

Habitat:

Murchison Falls Naitional Park and Kidepo Valley National Park. It requires large territories and tall trees for nesting

Migration Pattern:

The Martial Eagle is non-migratory, maintaining large home ranges year-round.

Migration Distance:

Individuals may roam tens to hundreds of kilometers in search of food.

The Martial Eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus) is one of Africa’s most powerful birds of prey, bold, commanding, and built for dominance in the open skies. A member of the Accipitridae family, it stands at the top of the avian food chain.

A Symbol of Strength Under Threat

Once widespread, the Martial Eagle now faces a quieter future. Its presence still commands respect, but its decline reminds us that even the strongest species depend on our willingness to protect the wild spaces they call home.
