The Silent Hunter of Open Skies
The Shikra (Accipiter badius) is a small but fearless bird of prey, sharp-eyed and quick, often slipping quietly through Uganda’s skies in search of its next meal. A member of the Accipitridae family, it is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN report of 2023, with a stable and widespread population, though exact global numbers are not clearly defined.
In Uganda, the Shikra is surprisingly adaptable. It can be found in woodlands, savannas, farmlands, and even urban gardens, making it one of the more familiar raptors to those who look closely. It feeds on small birds, insects, and reptiles, striking with speed and precision.
The species is mostly non-migratory, especially in East Africa, but some populations elsewhere show seasonal movements. In Uganda, it typically makes only short local movements, usually within tens of kilometers, following food availability.
Quiet, efficient, and resilient, the Shikra is a reminder that even in changing landscapes, nature finds a way to endure.
